First skirt? No problem! Our Classics pattern walks you through getting the perfect fit―waist, length, and hip to waist ratio. We've worked out all the math (and yardage) for you, inch by inch. Soon to become part of your go-to wardrobe for fall and winter, and a great excuse to buy boots!

Two US 5 (3.75mm) 24"/60cm circular needles, or two sizes smaller than gauge needle size.
Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook, 6-10 yds/5-9m smooth dk-weight yarn, and locking marker, for provisional cast-on.
2 small point protectors to use circular needle as stitch holder.
Stitch marker.
Darning needle to finish.
¾"/2cm non-roll elastic (waist measurement plus 2"/5cm).
Needle and thread.
Optional: Blocking wires.

20 sts/28 rows = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch. Wet block to test gauge and drape

Knit from the waist down, fabric is stockinette with a ribbed hem. A provisional cast-on starts the waistband, joined and knit in the round. Then stitches are divided for front and back panels, knit flat, and seamed when knitting is complete. Side seams give flattering structure and strength, and combined with the knit-down fabric (smaller needles, tighter gauge), your skirt will retain its shape.
