Simple Straight Skirt - Donegal Tweed Version

Simple Straight Skirt - Donegal Tweed Version

"Excuse to buy boots."

The Simple Straight Skirt is the first we designed, and it quickly became a favorite among customers and staff. We like to wear it casually with legging and boots, or dress it up a bit. Tahki Donegal Tweed, a 100% pure wool from Ireland with those signature tweedy flecks we love, creates a durable, firm fabric that's easy to wear.

First skirt? No problem! Our Classics pattern walks you through getting the perfect fit - waist, length, and hip to waist ratio. Wear it at your natural waist, or adjust elastic waistband to sit lower on your hip. Whatever is most comfortable and suits your style. Pattern also shows images of a sporty 16" length and a suit-ier 19" length but you can make it any length you like. We've worked out all the math (and yardage) for you, inch by inch.

Knit from the waist down, fabric is stockinette with a ribbed hem. A provisional cast-on starts the waistband, joined and knit in the round. Then stitches are divided for front and back panels, knit flat, and seamed when knitting is complete. Side seams give flattering structure and strength, and combined with the knit-down fabric (smaller needles, tighter gauge), your skirt will retain its shape.

Soon to become part of your go-to wardrobe for fall and winter, and a great excuse to buy boots!

Pick up a copy of the pattern below and choose from a shade of bottom-friendly Tahki Donegal Tweed (for a full selection of colors, head over to the Tahki Donegal Tweed page). The Basic Details tab will tell you how many skeins you'll need for your size.

Skirt is knit from the waist down to the hem. A provisional cast-on begins the waistband, knit in the round. Front and back panels are then knit separately, flat, then seamed. Step by step instructions for customizing length and shape. More straight than curvy? We have adjustments for that. Follow instructions for the light worsted gauge if using the Tahki Donegal Tweed.

To choose your size, measure around the fullest part of your hips and use this number for your actual finished measurement (we’ve added the seam stitches for you). If necessary, round up, not down—the skirt should just skim your hips without stretching to keep it from getting ‘butt sprung’ (excuse the expression!). If you’d prefer a little more ease, choose the next size up.

We’ve knitted the waistband 4 inches smaller than the hips on all sizes to reduce fabric bulk. Any greater difference between your waist and hips can be adjusted by tightening the elastic. Typically, your waistband must be at least this big to slip on over your hips or shoulders without adding a zipper.
