Seaming with Mattress Stitch

Mattress stitch seaming is like magic—it’s virtually invisible. For many of us, it has been the single most important skill for beautifully finished project.

If you haven’t tried it, your knitting life is about to change.

It’s important to be consistent and to stay in the same ‘ditch’ between the first two edge stitches and not jump to the ‘between’ ditch in the middle of a stitch. Your seam should result in two perfect Vs side by side—no half Vs please!

NOTES

Determine the lengths of your backs and fronts by counting rows, not by measuring (which can be inaccurate). When it’s time to seam side edges together, you will simply work one-to-one up the ladders. Note: Sleeve edges will always be same number of rows!

As you get within a few inches of the top ofyour seam, stop and count ladders on each side. If you don’t still have the same number on both sides, you may need to ease by taking two rungs on one side or the other.
