Spin-Stitch Scarf Using Rowan Kidsilk Haze

“Not lace, but so lace-like!”

We first used this traditional Estonian stitch in a scarf pattern for the 2016 LYS Tour. Not lace, but so lace-like! Not cabled, but twisted by ‘spinning’ a cluster of stitches 180°!

See the "Knitter's Notes" for a very helpful tip.

Shown in Rowan Kidsilk Haze

Knit in Rowan Kidsilk Haze, a lace-weight mohair with a strong silk core, the blocked fabric is gossamer fine between the twists. And the surface has such a lovely undulating texture and motion. Twists along the edges create deep, three-dimensional scallops. Smaller scarf fits easily inside a jacket, larger version is wider and longer, and can be wrapped round and round. Dressy or casual, in neutrals or jewel tones, this accessory is one you'll reach for again and again!

[BLOCKED]
Scarf: Small,
approx. 10½ x 55"/27 x 140cm.
Large, approx. 16½ x 73"/ 42 x 185cm.
Details given for small scarf; large scarf in parentheses ( ).

Small scarf: 2 skeins Rowan Kidsilk Haze (230 yds/ 210m each); Shown in burgundy, Color 595.
Large scarf: 4 skeins Rowan Kidsilk Haze (230 yds/210m each); Shown in ivory, Color 634.

US 8 (5mm) needle, or size to obtain gauge.
One double-point needle (DPN) 2-3 sizes smaller than gauge needle.
Stitch markers, including a locking marker.
Darning needle to finish.
Approx. 54 (72) fork blocking pins (or twice as many T-pins) for pinning scallops; blocking wires or extra pins for ends.

Approx. 24 sts/24 rows = 4"/10cm in pattern after blocking.
Note: It’s a good idea to knit—and block—a swatch, not for exact gauge, but to be sure you like the fabric.

To make sure you're spinning stitches in the correct direction, notice that all spins in any spin row are spun in the same direction, and all spins in any vertical column slant in the same direction. When you begin a spin, glance at spin directly below to check that you are spinning in the same direction.

Blocking this project will make all the difference. When finishing, our fork blocking pins, sturdy and light, make blocking the rounded scallops along the edge of this scarf a breeze!
