Simple Straight Skirt Using Isager Aran Tweed
The Design
“Timelessly tweedy.”
The Simple Straight Skirt was the first skirt we ever designed. It quickly became a favorite! Our pattern walks you through getting the perfect fit—waist, length, and hip-to-waist ratio. We chose to knit this version with the stockinette side out, but it’s just as stylish if you seam it with the reverse stockinette stitch showing!
Knit in Isager Aran Tweed, the Simple Straight Skirt has a durable, firm fabric that’s easy to wear. This single-ply 100% wool yarn rests between an aran- and chunky-weight gauge, has a toothy touch, gentle heft, and those signature tweedy flecks. Strong, resilient, warm—it’s sure to create the perfect skirt for the chillier seasons.

For custom lengths: To lengthen or shorten skirt, add or subtract approx. 28 (29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38, 40, 41, 43, 45)yds / 26 (27, 29, 31, 32, 34, 35, 37, 38, 40, 42)m of yarn for each 1"/2.5cm of knitted length.
NEEDLES & NOTIONS

Two US 5 (3.75mm) 24"/60cm circular needles, or two sizes smaller than gauge needle size.
Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook, 6-10 yds/5-9m smooth dk-weight yarn, and locking marker, for provisional cast-on.
2 small point protectors to use circular needle as stitch holder.
Stitch marker.
Darning needle to finish.
¾"/2cm non-roll elastic (waist measurement plus 2"/5cm).
Needle and thread.
Optional: Blocking wires.
GAUGE
20 sts/28 rows = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch. Wet block to test gauge and drape.
KNITTER'S NOTES
Skirt is knit from the waist down to the hem. A provisional cast-on begins the waistband, knit in the round. Front and back panels are then knit separately, flat, then seamed. Step by step instructions for customizing length and shape. More straight than curvy? We have adjustments for that. Follow instructions for the light worsted gauge if using the Isager Aran Tweed.
CHOOSING A SIZE: To choose your size, measure around the fullest part of your hips and use this number for your actual finished measurement (we’ve added the seam stitches for you). If necessary, round up, not down—the skirt should just skim your hips without stretching to keep it from getting ‘butt sprung’ (excuse the expression!). If you’d prefer a little more ease, choose the next size up.
We’ve knitted the waistband 4 inches smaller than the hips on all sizes to reduce fabric bulk. Any greater difference between your waist and hips can be adjusted by tightening the elastic. Typically, your waistband must be at least this big to slip on over your hips or shoulders without adding a zipper.
