Oval Crocheted Bucket Bag Using Hemp for Knitting allhemp6

“A cute carryall in durable hemp!”

It all started with a straw backpack Kit found years ago at a New York street market. The bag is no more but Kit's sketch survived. We liked the capacious 'bucket' size, but preferred an oval base for less bulky proportions. We created a handy smaller version and kept scaling down 'til we arrived at zippered pouches, perfect for notions, cosmetics, projects . . . . A bag for all reasons!

When we started our larger bag we had fun deciding—all one color or color-blocked? For our sample we decided on two colors, but how big of a bottom stripe? Fortunately, one skein of allhemp6 gave us just the right amount for the generous oval base—plus a pleasing proportion of color right up the sides. Easy!

Shown in Hemp for Knitting allhemp6

Made from a renewable resource, grown without pesticides or herbicides in China, allhemp6 won't shrink, stretch, or pill! Hemp For Knitting's Canadian founder, Lana Hames, works with a Chinese company to wet-spin the long-line hemp fibers for softness and sheen. Cool in the summer and warm in the winter, nature's strongest, most long-wearing fiber makes the perfect sweater yarn, especially for kids and men who run hot.

Smaller bucket bag (not shown): 3 skeins Hemp for Knitting allhemp6 (165 yds/150m each).
Or approx. 450 yds/410m of a strong worsted weight cotton or hemp yarn.
Larger bucket bag: 5 skeins Hemp for Knitting allhemp6 (165 yds/150m each).
Or approx. 755 yds/690m of a strong worsted weight cotton or hemp yarn.
Larger bag shown with backpack straps and color-blocked using Color 12 (4 skeins) and Color 29 (1 skein).

US E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.
US F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook or one size larger than gauge hook for straps.
4 locking markers, one in a different color.
Blunt darning needle to finish.

Approx. 20 sc/24 rounds = 4"/10 cm on gauge hook.

Both size bucket bags can be made with either the backpack or drawstring straps--you decide! Wouldn't it be fun to make the smaller size into a backpack for your favorite little stitcher?

The fabric made with allhemp6 is very firm, so choose a crochet hook with a comfortable grip.
