Mistake Rib Beanie & Scarf Using Berroco Ultra Alpaca

“Delightfully soft.”

Ah, the magic of mistake rib—it's worked in the soothing rhythm of K2/P2 ribbing but an extra stitch 'oopses' the next row over by one, giving you a much more complex texture than the simple ribbing instructions imply. Knit in a classic worsted weight or luxurious chunky, this set is cozy and modern.

The ideal balance of silky alpaca and Peruvian Highland wool, Berroco’s Ultra Alpaca is spun up perfectly round and light at five stitches to the inch. The alpaca drinks up dye for super-saturated colors—each is beautiful on its own, or combine them for bold colorblocked impact.

Peruvian Highland wool has enough bounce to balance the drape of alpaca and add resilience as well. Sturdy enough to wear everyday, Ultra Alpaca is delightfully soft. It’s also great for warmth but not too hot, making it ideal for multi-season wear and also a favorite for men.

Beanie: 1 skein Berroco Ultra Alpaca (215 yds/198m each): 150 yds/137m for beanie plus 40 yds/37m for pom-pom).
Scarf: 2 skeins Berroco Ultra Alpaca (215 yds/198m each). Both shown here in color 62113 Slate.

Beanie: US 9 (5.5mm) 16"/40cm circular and double-point needles, or size to obtain gauge; plus US 7 (4.5mm) 16"/40cm circular needle, or two sizes smaller than gauge needle.
3 stitch markers; 1 locking marker.
Darning needle to finish.
Optional: large (3-3/8"/85mm) pom-pom maker.

Scarf: US 10½ (6.5mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge.
Darning needle to finish.

Beanie: Approx. 19 sts = 4"/10cm in pattern, unstretched.
Scarf: Approx. 17 sts = 4"/10cm in pattern, unstretched.

The beanie knits up in a jiff, falling squarely into our “movie and the news” category of quick projects. And it’s handsome on men and women alike, so be prepared for requests from both!

Sizing tip: Ribbing shortens a little in length as it stretches in width. For a larger head, it's easier to add a few rounds than to change the stitch count and crown shaping.
