Linen Stitch Loop Using Manos Alegria
Linen Stitch Loop Using Manos Alegria
This free pattern takes our Linen Stitch Scarf and throws it for a loop—literally! Knit in the round, linen stitch becomes just a little easier. You simply work the same two stitches over and over—no fussing with the wrong side. (Since the right side is always facing you, there's no 'working blind' from the purl side!) And a little reverse stockinette stitch at the edges tidies things up nicely.
We love how the linen stitch texture looks woven—and how it tends to ‘pixelate’ variegated yarns. Naturally, we gravitated towards Manos Alegria’s dazzling array of vibrant variegations and saturated solids—and picked out one of each! Alegria is a fingering-weight blend of superwash merino and sturdy polyamide—easy to care for, wonderfully resilient, and (best of all) super soft.

See the "Basic Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.
GLOSSARY: CC = contrasting color; K = knit; MC = main color; Sl = slip specified number of stitches from left needle to right needle without working (slip purlwise unless directed otherwise); St(s) = stitch(es); YB = bring yarn to back between needles; YF = bring yarn to front between needles.
Cast on: With smaller needle and MC, use cable cast-on method to cast on 347 sts.
Note: Place a marker every 50 sts to make counting easier; remove these markers on following row.
Place marker in contrasting color on needle to designate beginning of round and join in the round, being careful not to twist. On subsequent rounds, slip marker as you come to it.
Welted edging: Continuing with MC, purl 4 rounds.
Linen stitch: Change to gauge needle and continue to work as follows:
Round 1: With MC, *K1, YF, Sl 1, YB*; repeat between * * to last st, K1.
Round 2: With MC, *YF, Sl 1, YB, K1*; repeat between * * to last st, YF, Sl 1, YB.
Rounds 3 & 4: Join CC and repeat Rounds 1 and 2.
Repeat Rounds 1–4, alternating MC and CC, bringing new color up behind old color at each color change row (not too tight!), until piece measures 10½"/26.5cm, or desired depth from cast-on edge, ending with CC rounds. Note: You will need approx. 40 yds/37m of MC yarn for the final 2 linen-stitch rounds, 4 welt rounds, and bind-off.
Cut CC yarn, leaving 8"/20cm tail for weaving in later.
Change to smaller needle; with MC, repeat Rounds 1 and 2 once more.
Welt edging: Continuing with smaller needle and MC, purl 4 rounds.
Bind off loosely purlwise, matching tension of cast-on edge as closely as possible.
Note: If you prefer, turn work so wrong side (i.e., knit side) is facing you and bind off loosely knitwise.
Finishing: Weave in ends as invisibly as possible on wrong side, using tails to close any gaps.
Soak for 20 minutes in tepid water with a little no-rinse wool soap. Gently squeeze out as much water as possible. Roll in a towel and gently squeeze out more moisture; or place in a zippered pillowcase or lingerie bag and run through spin-only cycle in washing machine.
Lay flat on blocking board or other moisture-safe surface. Weave blocking wires (through both layers) just inside welt, along first row of linen stitch; slip blocking wires into folded ends, between layers. Pin wires out to desired dimensions. If using pins instead of wires, place pins close together to prevent scalloping along edges.
Allow to dry thoroughly. Gently steam press using a press cloth, avoiding welts and folds. When dry, touch up fold areas to smooth out any creases.
