Garter Blocks Baby Blanket (In 2 or 5 Colors)

“Modern graphic meets primitive patchwork.”

This all-knit blanket is a study in simplicity. Renée Brofsky’s original multi-color version has primitive patchwork appeal. Of course, we love the black-and-white version for its modern graphic edge. Knit in strips, this is a very portable project with just a little simple seaming.

See the "Knitter's Notes" on how mathematics helped create a soothing five-color sequence.

Approx. 18 sts = 4"/10cm in garter stitch.

For the five-color version of our blanket, our design goal was to have no color repeat in any vertical or horizontal row, and no diagonal adjacencies. Is that so much to ask? Well, we just couldn’t do it.

Beatrice White to the rescue! This savvy knitter and math grad student used ‘combinatorics’ (learned at math ‘camp’ in Budapest...seriously!)—and a pencil, Sudoku style—to work out a sequence that meets all of our criteria. Beautifully.

Bea pointed out that in this solution the same colors always follow one another—but that an alert baby might discover this repetition and find it somehow comforting. I know we do! Thanks, Bea.
