Perfect in any baby's room—whether modern, retro, romantic or eclectic—this wee patchwork 'blankie' will always be a beloved gift. It's simply knit in garter stitch strips (totally beginner-worthy!) so it's an easy project to tote along and straightforward to assemble.

Yarn Source

Coming soonComing soon.

5-Color Version: 10 skeins Mission Falls 1824 Wool (85 yds/78m each). We used 2 skeins each Colors 536 Aster (A), 533 Squash (B), 534 Rhubarb (C), 28 Pistachio (D), 25 Mallow (E).
Or 850 yds/780m (170 yds/156m each of 5 colors) of an equivalent worsted-weight yarn.

US 8 (5mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge.

Approx. 18 sts = 4"/10cm in garter stitch.

For the five-color version of our blanket, our design goal was to have no color repeat in any vertical or horizontal row, and no diagonal adjacencies. Is that so much to ask? Well, we just couldn’t do it.

Beatrice White to the rescue! This savvy knitter and math grad student used ‘combinatorics’ (learned at math ‘camp’ in Budapest...seriously!)—and a pencil, Sudoku style—to work out a sequence that meets all of our criteria. Beautifully.

Bea pointed out that in this solution the same colors always follow one another—but that an alert baby might discover this repetition and find it somehow comforting. I know we do! Thanks, Bea.
