Welted Cowl & Infinity Loop

Welted Cowl & Infinity Loop

Welted Cowl & Infinity Loop

Welted Cowl & Infinity Loop

“Purl welts for a sculptural effect.”

We noticed that some knitters were knitting the cowl from our Churchmouse Classics Easy Folded Poncho separately and that gave us an idea. Why not double the cowl's circumference for an infinity loop that you can wear long and elegant, or twist double for twice the cozy? We added purl welts for a sculptural effect. And, while we were at it, we two-toned it for clever reversibility!

Shown in Blue Sky Fibers Baby Alpaca

Photo Notes: Kate is wearing a Churchmouse Classics Easy Folded Poncho under the two-color infinity loop. Shown styled as written, or turned inside out with seam centered down front. Nora wears the cowl with a matching set of Churchmouse Classics Welted Fingerless Gloves. If you knit the cowl in Rowan Felted Tweed, you have plenty of yarn remaining to knit a pair of gloves.

Yarn Source

Blue Sky Fibers

Cowl: Approx. 24"/61cm around x 11"/28cm deep, with welts flattened.
Infinity Loop: Approx. 48"/122cm around by 11"/28cm deep, with welts flattened.

Cowl: Approx. 220 yds/200m of dk- or sport-weight alpaca or alpaca-blend yarn. Shown lower row: 2 skeins Rowan Felted Tweed (191 yds/175m each), Color 181.
Infinity Loop: Approx. 440 yds/400m of dk- or sport-weight alpaca or alpaca-blend yarn; two color version requires approx. 280 yds/265m of one color and 150 yds/146m of the other. Shown upper row: 5 skeins Blue Sky Alpacas Melange (110 yds/100m each), 3 skeins Color 816 and 2 skeins Color 522.

US 6 (4mm) 16–24"/40–60cm circular, or size to obtain gauge.
One US 8 (5mm) needle, or two sizes larger than gauge needle, for bind-off.

Approx. 20 sts = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch in the round, blocked.

You might notice a difference in our two sample pieces. We wet blocked both pieces when we were done, but chose to press the welts on the golden Felted Tweed piece to flatten them further. It's knitter's choice—you decide if you're after more drape and fluidity, or want something more cushy!
