Modern Wrapper Pattern

Modern Wrapper Pattern

Modern Wrapper Pattern

The Design

“One size to flatter every body.”

The Modern Wrapper walks the line between cozy and chic, snuggly and sleek; an oversized piece designed with thoughtful details to fit well and stay on the shoulders in a softly draping fabric to flatter every body. Wear it around the house, or dress it up a little for town. We mixed a strand of tweedy wool or smooth alpaca-blend fingering-weight yarn with lace-weight mohair on nice big needles for luxurious drape and a quick knit. Customize the fit by adjusting sleeve length.

See how we've used this pattern!

The Details

FINISHED SIZE
One size. Dimensions after blocking: Approx. 37"/94 cm back width at underarm (74"/188cm body circumference); 28"/71cm length from top of shoulder to hem; 8"/20cm sleeve length; 9½"/24cm cuff circumference.

YARN
14 balls Rowan Fine Tweed (98 yds/90m each) and 6 skeins Rowan Rowan Kidsilk Haze (229 yds/209m each). Shown top left in Fine Tweed Color 374 and Kidsilk Haze Color 641. Shown middle row left in Fine Tweed Color 368 and Kidsilk Haze Color 660.
Or 5 skeins Isager Alpaca 2 (270 yds/247m each) and 6 skeins Rowan Kidsilk Haze (229 yds/209m each). Shown bottom left in Alpaca Merino 2 Color 30 and Kidsilk Haze Color 599.
Or approx. 1350 yds/1234m of an equivalent fingering-weight yarn and a lace-weight mohair yarn, held together.

Visit our project pages to see other color possibilities: Fine Tweed and Kidsilk Haze, Alpaca 2 and Kidsilk Haze, and Brooklyn Tweed Loft and Kidsilk Haze.

NEEDLES
US 10 (6mm) 24–32"/60–80cm circular needle, or size to obtain gauge, plus a spare gauge-size needle for three needle bind-off.
US 9 (5.5mm) needles, or one size smaller than gauge size.

Two ring markers and at least 36 locking stitch markers, or add our Modern Wrapper Notions Kit for all the markers you'll need, plus a darning needle.

GAUGE
Approx. 15 sts/22 rows = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch with yarns held together, after blocking.

KNITTER'S NOTES
Depending on what fiber combination you choose, your finished piece will sport unique characteristics. We love the Fine Tweed and Kidsilk Haze pairing for a casual, tweedy version. Brooklyn Tweed Loft and Kidsilk Haze create a fluffy, light fabric for woolly drape without weight. The Alpaca Merino 2 and Kidsilk Haze offer a dressy drape and sleek fabric. Which version will you choose?

You'll learn a new short-row technique too! We chose to mark the working strand of yarn as we turned, rather than the more familiar wrap & turn method. Later, you'll use the marker to lift the turning strand onto your left needle so you can work it together with the next st to close the turning gap. Give it a try—it's easy!
