The Design

Our favorite poncho transcends the trends. It’s easy to knit (just one long stockinette rectangle), easy to finish, and easy to throw on. For this version, we’ve created a free adaptation to show you how to play with ombré shading by triple stranding a lace-weight yarn in varying proportions of two colors. We chose subtle, tonal shades, but you can pick any two colors you like!

This version of our Easy Folded Poncho was knit by blending two colors of Isager Spinni Wool 1, holding three strands of yarn together throughout. Rooted in the knitting traditions of Denmark, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands, Spinni is a light, lace-weight yarn with a single-ply construction, distinct structure, and a pretty color palette inspired by the flora of Denmark!

The Details

FINISHED SIZE
One size: Poncho: 22 x 50"/56 x 127cm, before folding.
Cowl: 24"/61cm around x 8"/20cm tall.

YARN
8 skeins Isager Spinni Wool 1 (330yds/302m each).
4 skeins each in 2 colors, Color A and Color B.
Or approx. 2640 yds/2414m total (or 1320 yds/1207m each in 2 colors) of an equivalent lace-weight yarn.

Notes: Yarn is held triple-stranded throughout. Our sample used Color 13s as A and Color 10s as B. Whichever color you designate as ‘A’ will appear at both ends, while color ‘B’ will be the one that wraps around the fold when your finished poncho is folded and seamed. Choose different shades of the same color family for a gentle gradient effect, or cross the color wheel to produce a tweedier mix and more contrast. It’s fun either way!

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
US 6 (4mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge; plus 2 sizes larger for binding off.
16–24"/40–60cm circular needle in gauge size for cowl.
Size H (5mm) or larger crochet hook for provisional cast-on.
2 locking stitch markers. Blocking wires.

GAUGE
20 sts/27 rows= 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch, wet-blocked and steam pressed.
