Vineyard Cowl - Blue Sky Baby Alpaca Version

Vineyard Cowl - Blue Sky Baby Alpaca Version

"Shaped for extra coziness."

The vertical lines of cable-like twists in the Vineyard Cowl remind us of rows of grapevines meeting in the distance, converging as the cowl narrows at the top.

Knit in the round using the super-soft Blue Sky Fibers Baby Alpaca, this cowl tucks nicely inside a jacket or dresses up a basic tee with jeans. And the softness of Baby Alpaca is just where you want it, draped around your neck!

With a simple pattern that's quickly 'readable,' a delightfully simple combination of slipped stitches and yarn-overs create the stitch pattern (no cable needles required!). Easy, gradual decreasing provides shaping for a little extra warmth around your neck.

Click on "The Free Pattern" tab to see the cowl pattern. You'll need 2 skeins of Baby Alpaca for the cowl shown. We've chosen a few favorite shades below, but for a full selection of colors, just head over to the Blue Sky Fibers Baby Alpaca page.

GLOSSARY: Dec = decrease; K = knit; P = purl; P2Tog = purl 2 sts together; Sl = slip (pass st from left needle to right needle without working it); St(s) = stitch(es); YO = yarn over (bring yarn forward between needles, then back over right needle).

The twist in this pattern is created by passing a slipped stitch over 2 stitches in Round 1 (reducing the stitch count), then working a yarn-over between those same 2 stitches in Round 2 (bringing the stitch count back to the original number). The cowl is shaped by gradually decreasing the number of purl stitches between twists.

Cast on: Using long-tail method, cast on 156 sts loosely. Place marker to designate beginning of round; join in the round, being careful not to twist.

Pattern stitch:
Round 1: *P3, with yarn in back Sl 1 purlwise, K2, pass slipped st over the 2 knit sts*; repeat between * * to marker. [130 sts]
Round 2: *P3, K1, YO, K1*; repeat between * * to marker. [156 sts]
Rounds 3 & 4: *P3, K3*; repeat between * * to marker.
Repeat Rounds 1−4 four more times, then Rounds 1−3 once.
Next round (dec): *P1, P2Tog, K3, P3, K3*; repeat between * * to marker. [143 sts]
Working alternately 2 purl sts and then 3 purl sts between knit sts as established, repeat Rounds 1−4 three more times, then Rounds 1−3 once.
Next round (dec): *P2, K3, P1, P2Tog, K3*; repeat between * * to marker. [130 sts]
Working 2 purl sts between knit sts as established, repeat Rounds 1−4 five more times, then Rounds 1−3 once.
