Thoroughly Modular Granny Loop - Mrs Moon Plump DK Version

Thoroughly Modular Granny Loop - Mrs Moon Plump DK Version

"Modular and Modern!"

Even newbie crocheters (as are many of us who come over from knitting) love the ease and fun of granny squares. The sets of 3 double-crochets that make up the clusters are rhythmic to do, and build up fabric so fast. We love its nostalgic charm so much, we wanted to wear it! So we started with a center strip instead of the traditional circle, then went round and round in classic granny mode.

This version shows off the best of Mrs Moon Plump DK - softness, squish and color. With plenty of strength to give this cowl structure, this DK-weight charm of a yarn is never stiff, even in a patterned stitch. Cowl softly nestles around your neck and brightens up any winter wardrobe. We've combined color sets of five that are just so happy!

Seam one piece and it's a cowl; seam two together at both ends for an infinity loop, or at one end for a scarf. Clever granny!

GLOSSARY: Ch = chain; DC = double crochet; SC = single crochet; Sl St = slip stitch; St(s) = stitch(es).

Foundation chain: With Color A, Ch 68 (multiple of 3 plus 5).

Center strip: Row 1: Working into back bumps of chains, 3 DC into 5th chain from hook, *skip 2 ch, 3 DC into next ch*; repeat between * * to last 3 foundation ch, skip 2 ch, 1 DC into last ch; pull Color B through on last pull-through of final dc. Do not turn work. [21 3dc clusters]

Granny rectangle rounds: Round 1: With Color B, Ch 3. Into the space created by the last DC of prior row, work 2 DC, Ch 2 (corner space), 3 DC, Ch 2 (corner space), 3 DC. Note: You have worked first 2 corners; Row 1 strip has pivoted so foundation chain edge is at the top.
3 DC into each ch2 space between clusters on foundation chain, stopping before ch4 space at far end. [21 clusters along this side, after ch2 corner].
Into ch4 space, work 3 DC, Ch 2 (corner space), 3 DC, Ch 2 (corner space), 3 DC. Note: You have worked third and fourth corners; each corner has two 3dc clusters with a ch2 space in between. Strip has pivoted so you are ready to work into top edge of center strip.
3 DC into each space between clusters along top edge of center strip; join with Sl St into top of Ch 3 at beginning of round. [22 clusters along each side, 1 at each end]

Round 2: With Color C, Ch 1, lay ch1 to right and (SC, Ch 2, 2 DC) into space between clusters. *(3 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC) into ch2 corner space* for first corner; repeat between * * for second corner.
3 DC into each space between clusters along first long side.
Repeat between * * twice for third and fourth corners.
3 DC into each space between clusters along second long side, then Sl St into top of sc/ch2 at end of round.

Round 3: With Color D, Ch 1, lay ch1 to right and (SC, Ch 2, 2 DC) into space between clusters.
3 DC into each space between clusters to first corner space (on first Round 3 there will be one space/cluster; next round there will be two, etc.).
*3 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC into ch2 corner space* for first corner.
3 DC into space(s) between clusters along short end to next corner.
Repeat between * * for second corner.
3 DC into each space between clusters along first long side.
Repeat between * * for third corner.
3 DC into space(s) between clusters along short end to next corner.
Repeat between * * for fourth corner.
3 DC into each space between clusters along second long side.
Sl St into top of sc/ch2 at end of round.

Repeat Round 3 four more times, using colors in the following sequence: E, B, C, A (or any order you choose). [7 rounds total] Fasten off.

Scarf/loop only: Make a second piece exactly like the first.

Blocking: Soak in warm water with a little no-rinse wool wash for 10-15 minutes; gently squeeze to remove as much water as possible (do not twist or wring); roll in a dry towel or run through machine spin cycle in a lingerie bag. Pin corners to dimensions and pin along edges. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Seaming: For cowl: Bring short ends of one piece together (right sides together, wrong sides facing out) being careful not to twist. With new 2 yd/2m piece of yarn, begin with slip knot on hook and Sl St twice into ch2 corner space; to join 3dc clusters, Sl St into inner legs of edge sts (those closest to each other); end with Sl St twice into final ch2 corner.

For scarf: Bring short ends of two pieces together (right sides together, wrong sides facing out); seam as for cowl.

For loop: Seam two short ends together as for scarf, then bring right sides of two remaining short ends together, being careful not to twist. Work second seam as first.

Fasten off. Weave in ends on wrong side. Gently steam press seam(s).
