Stadium Scarf - Pure Wool Worsted Version

Stadium Scarf - Pure Wool Worsted Version

"Go team!"

Sport your team’s colors in style with this easy-to-knit ribbed scarf. This free pattern is a play (get it?) on our popular ‘One By One, Two By Two’ scarf; it’s worked in three different two-color sections for a fun asymmetric look.

We worked up this sample (left) in Seattle Seahawk inspired team colors. Or choose three other team colors to cheer on your own local school or professional team. NFL fans, just do an internet search to find the 'official' team colors and choose three that come close.

Check in with our Ravelry group on the 'Hello Football Season!' threadchances are, you'll find a fellow fan there with great advice on the ideal colors for your favorite team.

We’ve chosen some common team colors here, but if you don't see what you need, head over to the Rowan Pure Wool Worsted yarn page to browse the full selection of colors.

Approx. 7 x 72"/18x180cm, after blocking.

3 skeins Rowan Pure Wool Worsted (219 yds/200m) or equivalent of a worsted-weight yarn, 1 each in 3 team colors. Label your colors A, B and C before you begin. (Color A will be your cast-on and bind-off.) Sample shown in color 112 Moonstone (color A), 143 Electric (color B), and 125 Olive (color C).

US 8 (5mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge.

Approx. 32 sts = 4"/10cm in K1/P1 ribbing, not stretched.

See the "Basic Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.

Cast on: Using cable cast-on method and Color A, cast on 52 sts, working firmly.

Stripe section 1 (AB): Row 1: (K1, P1) to end. Note: This row establishes the ribbing pattern used throughout the scarf.

Drop Color A; do not cut. Attach Color B and work 2 rows in ribbing as established. Note: Carry color not in use up the side; do not cut yet. When changing colors, bring new color in behind old color, so that the twist along the edge is consistent. Give a gentle tug on new color to tidy up its last stitch before working first stitch of new stripe.

Alternating 2 rows each of A and B, work until piece measures approx. 24"/60cm from cast-on edge and you have just completed 2 rows of A. Cut A, leaving a 6"/15cm tail; set remainder of A aside for later.

Stripe section 2 (BC): Work 2 rows of B. Attach C and continue in striping pattern, alternating 2 rows each of B and C until piece measures approx. 48"/120cm from cast-on edge and you have just completed 2 rows of Color B. Cut B, leaving a tail as before.

Stripe section 3 (CA): Work 2 rows of C. Attach A and continue in pattern, alternating 2 rows each of C and A until piece measures approx. 72"/180cm from cast-on edge and you have just completed 2 rows of Color A. Bind off in pattern tightly to match tension of cast-on edge.

Finishing: Weave in ends as invisibly as possible (this scarf is reversible).

Block (optional): To wet block, soak for 15 minutes in tepid water with a no-rinse wool soap. Gently squeeze out as much water as possible. Roll up in a towel and gently squeeze out more moisture, or fold into a lingerie bag and run through spin cycle of washing machine. Lay flat to dry. (Scarf will tend to stretch lengthwise when damp, so be sure to ease long edges out to full width.)
