Pom-Pom Sparkle Cowl Project

Pom-Pom Sparkle Cowl Project

“Last minute sparkle!”

For a new twist on our Last-Minute Cowl, we tied it around the middle with a drawstring then added pom-poms and some sparkle! Whether you tie the drawstring or not, the bouncing pom-poms will shimmer! Knit in the round on nice big needles (US 13), this cowl is made quick and cushy by holding three strands together throughout - two strands of Katia Cotton Merino along with a festive, glimmering strand of Filatura di Crosa Night. Generously sized, this cowl styles beautifully atop your finest sweater or coat - a celebration of sparkle and warmth!

GLOSSARY: K = knit; P = purl; St(s) = stitch(es).

Make the pom-poms and drawstring first, so you won’t have to worry about saving enough yarn for them at the end.

Drawstring & Pom-poms:
Twisted cord drawstring: Cut 2 strands of Cotton Merino and 1 strand of Night each 4 yds/4m long. Holding all 3 strands together, tie one end around a stable object (e.g. door knob, chair back). Tie the other end and loop it around your the tip of your finger or a pencil. Twist until the cord is twisted very hard—the loop around your finger should get tight! Fold the twisted cord in half; allow it to twist back on itself. Untie the secured end. Knot it about 1"/2.5cm from the end.

Pom-poms: Using 2 strands of Cotton Merino and 1 of Night, make two pom-poms, 2½−3"/ 6.5−7.5cm in diameter, following directions on pom-pom maker.

Now you’re ready to start knitting!

Cast on: Holding together two strands of Cotton Merino and one strand of Night, using cable cast-on method, cast on 84 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker to denote beginning of round. Note: Hold these three strands together throughout.

Round 1: *K2, P2*; repeat between * * to end of round.

Repeat Round 1 until piece measures approx. 12"/31cm from cast-on edge, or desired depth and you have enough yarn left to bind off.

Finishing: Bind off loosely in pattern. Weave in ends on wrong side. Damp-, wet- or steam-block, as desired (do not let hot iron touch metallic fiber). Find the mid-point between cast-on and bound-off edges. Using a large darning needle, crochet hook or bodkin, thread drawstring horizontally along mid-point, going under the knit sts and over the purl sts, being careful to stay in the same row. Leave a gap of 4 sts between the ends of the drawstring.

Attach one pom-pom securely to each end of the drawstring, adjusting length as desired.

Try it on and shake those pom-poms!
