This unspun wool takes full advantage of the dual-coated nature of Icelandic sheep! Plötulopi combines both the short, soft inner coat—or þel—and the long, coarse outer coat—tog—which holds all of the hairs (and thus the strand itself) together. Drawing from the heartiness of Iceland’s native sheep, used to this country’s wild tundra and craggy terrain, it creates warm, rugged garments that are mildly water-resistant!
Because it’s unspun, Plötulopi tends to be brittle and easy to break, but it’s just as easy to put back together. Lay the two ends together and rub them between your palms with a bit of added dampness. Soon, your strand will be once again knittable! You can even use this method when you’re adding in another wheel (or plate, hence the name plötu)—no ends to weave in.
Istex sources its wool directly from the Icelandic farmers. It’s then scoured in the small, northern town of Blönduós and made into wheels in Mosfellsbær, near Reykjavik—where a mill has been in operation since 1896.
