Self-patterning and self-striping sock yarns are engineered to pattern at a sock circumference. We designed this simple scarf to take advantage of self-patterning sock yarns, such as Regia Design Line by Arne & Carlos.
This one-skein version is knit in a tube for a finished scarf that’s approx. 4"/10cm wide by 40"/102cm long. The pattern also includes information for a two-skein version (shown in the last picture in a discontinued yarn).
And pom-poms add a little pizazz. The easy-to-use pom-pom maker below lets you create a variety of sizes in a jiff. (We used the 1 3/8” size of the Small Pom-Pom Maker kit to make these little darlings.)
This tube-style scarf works up effortlessly and is fun on children and adults alike!
Approx. 4"/10cm wide x 40"/102cm (80"/203cm) long.
Directions given for 1-skein version; directions for 2-skein version in parentheses ( ).
1 (2) skeins Regia Design Line (459 yds/420m each).
Or approx. 459 yds/420m (918 yds/840m) of a self-patterning sock-weight yarn.
Note: Each 459-yd/420-m skein yields approx. 40"/102cm of length–make it the length you like!
NEEDLES & NOTIONS
US 2 (2.75mm) double-point needles, or size to obtain gauge. Blunt darning needle to finish. Optional: pom-pom maker.
32 sts = 4"/10cm in circular stockinette stitch.
See the "Basic Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.
Pompoms (optional): Before casting on, make four pom-poms according to the directions on the pom-pom maker package. Set aside. (For each pom-pom, we used approximately 100 wraps of yarn.)
Border: Cast on 64 stitches. Divide onto 3 needles (20/20/24) and join in round, being careful not to twist.
Ribbing Round 1: (K2, P2) around.
Repeat Ribbing Round 1 eleven more times. (12 rounds total)
Body: Knit every round until work measures approx 37"/94cm (77"/196cm) from cast-on edge, or until you have just enough yarn left to work 12 rounds ribbing and bind off.
Border:Work Ribbing Round 1 as above twelve times. Bind off loosely, matching tension of cast-on edge.
Finishing: Weave in all ends.
To block, lay out flat on a blocking board or other iron-proof surface, shifting as needed to untwist spiral and straighten fabric. Gently steam press to set. Press open ribbed borders.
Allow to dry. Sew optional pom-poms onto corners.
