Liesl Project: Louet Euroflax Sport Weight Version

Liesl Project: Louet Euroflax Sport Weight Version

There is so much to love about Liesl, a sleeveless shell from the brilliant Julie Weisenberger of Cocoknits. A neat, graceful neckline crowns gentle English tailoring, which then flows into a swaying, curved hem. And, glory of glories—it has pockets! Free-hanging pouch pockets are commonsensical and fashion-sensical, and they’re one of Liesl’s best features.

With sunny days in mind, we knit Liesl in Louet Euroflax Sport. This fiber is one of the world’s finest linen yarns and is a joy to wear in summery weather. It’s wet-spun, double-boiled, and then steamed for softness at a mill that’s been operating for generations. And it only gets softer wash after wash.

When we all started knitting this piece a couple of years ago, many of us discovered tips and made wee modifications. When we realized we were telling customers these same tips over and over, we decided to write them down. See what you think, and let us know what helps you with your Liesl knitting!

We find this piece fits nicely with a little negative ease. If you’re between sizes, consider going down for your size. Also, you can begin the piece with a larger size on the bottom (extra swing around your hips) and continue the decreases until you reach the next size down on top—there is lots of room to make adjustments as you move up the piece.

To be sure you join to work in the round without a twist, we suggest knitting the garter stitch border flat (knit every row). Then, join in the round on the first stockinette row. With a little more fabric visible, you can see a twist before it’s set into your knitting. Later, use your cast-on tail to seam up the gap in the garter border when you’re weaving in your ends.

Some of us like wider straps. Here’s one way we have achieved this:
Pam widened the straps on the 37" size from 10 stitches to 12 stitches. Once the piece is divided for the front and back, and you’re shaping the back armholes, decrease 2 fewer stitches at armhole edges than the pattern calls for. On Pam’s sample, this meant she decreased 1 st at each armhole edge 7 times (instead of 9) for a total of 55 back stitches. Then when it was time for the triple decreases at the sloped shoulders, she repeated the RS decrease row 6 times (instead of 5) to reach the 31 sts called for in the pattern so front and back shoulders match for seaming. Shape the front armhole as you did the back; end your neckline shaping when 12 stitches remain (instead of 10) and work evenly as called for in the pattern.

Many of us wanted a slightly higher neckline than the original.
We began our neckline shaping after we completed the armhole shaping plus 2 plain rows. This raised our neckline approx. 1".

Sometimes we like to omit the pockets to create another variation. To do this, just skip the entire paragraph on page 2 that begins, “At the Same Time: When piece measures 9" from beg . . .”.

This is a wonderful, wearable pattern, and we bet you won’t make just one—so enjoy!
