Last-Minute Mufflers

Last-Minute Mufflers

"Knits up in a jiff!"

Using US 17 (12mm) needles and some of our favorite super-chunky-weight or bulky-weight wools, a muffler can be knit up just in time. More tailored, it's a great gift (or project!) for the men in your life (or for anyone who prefers a cozy muffler to a cowl). Given all the irresistible yarn options, it’s a good thing they’re such a quick knit.

We tried versions in seed stitch and handsome 2x2 ribbing. We used Rowan Cocoon double-stranded for a chunky look. (Try using two different colors for luscious marling.)  The chunkiness of the yarn makes simple stitch patterns really pop!

We set the width at 6" and, depending on the yarn, got lengths of approximately 6–8'. Make it the length you like with the yarn you love! You’ll find our updated free pattern (that includes mistake rib, seed stitch and 2x2 rib options) in "The Free Pattern" tab. Head over to our yarn pages to see which colors strike your fancy. If you’d also like to try a cowl, check out our Last-Minute Cowls in super-chunky-weight or bulky-weight yarns.

FINISHED SIZE
Approx. 6–8"/15–20cm wide x 80–100"/203–254cm long, depending on the yarn and stitch pattern used.

YARN
Approx. 500 yds/457m of a bulky-weight yarn, held double. 4 skeins Rowan Cocoon (126 yds/115m each) in K2/P2 ribbing gave us a 6 x 102" muffler.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
US 17 (12mm) 24"/60cm circular needle, or size to obtain gauge. Darning needle to finish.

GAUGE
Approx. 8½ sts = 4"/10cm, blocked, depending on yarn and stitch pattern used. Note: Just get close.

See the "Basic Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.

GLOSSARY: K = knit; P = purl; St(s) = stitch(es); SM = slip marker

Seed-stitch version: Using either a bulky-weight yarn held double or a super-chunky-weight yarn held single: Cast on 13 sts.
Row 1: (K1, P1) to last st, K1.
Repeat Row 1 until desired length and you have enough yarn left to bind off. Bind off loosely in pattern.

K2/P2-ribbed version: Using either a bulky-weight yarn held double or a super-chunky-weight yarn held single: Cast on 20 sts.
Row 1: (K2, P2); repeat to end of row.
Repeat Row 1 until desired length and you have enough yarn left to bind off. Bind off firmly in pattern.

Mistake-rib version: Using either a bulky-weight yarn held double or a super-chunky-weight yarn held single: Cast on 21 sts.
Row 1: (K2, P2) to last stitch, K1.
Repeat Row 1 until desired length and you have just enough yarn left to bind off. Bind off in pattern.
Note: Although you are working in a K2/P2 pattern, only 1 knit vertical “rib” will appear on each side with 3 textured stitches in between. Always watch that the second K of your K2 lines up with this single knit rib.

Finishing: Weave in ends on wrong side. Damp-, wet- or steam-block, as needed. Or as time allows!
