Inside-Outside Cowl Project - Shibui Version

Inside-Outside Cowl Project - Shibui Version

"Subtle sophistication."

What’s mohair and silk on one side and superbaby alpaca and fine merino wool on the other? A dreamy Inside Outside Cowl in Shibui’s Silk Cloud and Cima, that’s what!

The Inside Outside Cowl showcases these two lace-weight yarns beautifully, and we fell in love with the subtle, sophisticated and textural monotone look that resulted from using the two different yarns in the same color.

With some very simple knitting and a little fussy finishing (see our Knitters' Notes tab above, right) you'll have a double-layer cowl that's totally seamless, utterly reversible, and very versatile. Wear the cowl with either color out, or shifted half way to show some of each.

Our project includes one skein each of Silk Cloud and Cima in the same color for beautiful tonal depth. (Using one skein each makes either the small or large cowl.) If you’d like to put together your own two-color combination, just visit the Silk Cloud and Cima pages–you’ll need one skein of each. You can also grab the pattern below if you don’t already own it.

FINISHED SIZE
Small cowl: Approx. 24"/61cm around x 5½"/14cm deep, after grafting or seaming.
Large cowl: Approx. 28"/71cm around x 9"/23cm deep, after grafting or seaming.

PROJECT INCLUDES
1 skein Shibui Cima (328 yds/299m) and
1 skein Shibui Silk Cloud (330 yds/300m) in a clear drawstring bag. Note: 2 skeins can make either a small or large cowl. Sample shown is large cowl in color 11 Tar (for both yarns).

YOU'LL ALSO NEED
Churchmouse Inside Outside Cowl pattern.
US 2⁄3 (3mm) 24" circular needle, or size to obtain gauge.
Another needle or set of needles (same size or smaller), for grafting.
US D-E (3.25-3.5mm) crochet hook for provisional cast-on.

GAUGE
Approx. 24 sts/38 rounds = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch in the round, blocked.

If there is a sticky part to this otherwise easy pattern, it’s the grafting—we recommend setting aside a couple of hours where you can begin and end the grafting. Once you've begun you won't want to stop.

We also recommend that you begin knitting this project with Cima and end with Silk Cloud, so that you do the grafting using Silk Cloud. It may seem counter-intuitive, but we’ve found that Silk Cloud is easier to use for grafting and for adjusting the grafted stitches’ tension.

If you've not grafted before, we suggest a practice session; knit up a couple of 24-stitch swatches and follow the grafting instructions. You'll get into a grafting rhythm in no time and emerge an expert!
