By Hand Serial / Issue 6: Blue Ridge Mountains

"A travel guide for crafters and makers."

The sixth issue of By Hand Serial focuses on the Blue Ridge Mountains, “from the high peaks of North Carolina up into the rolling hills of Virginia.” In her journey through this gorgeous region, Andrea Hungerford reflects on the “small moments—rather than the big ‘aha’ event—that make up the sum of an experience.

This issue is filled with photo essays, day trips, foodie excursions, and conversations with local makers (including the Black Mountain Yarn Shop, Cestari Sheep & Wool Company, Essential Journeys, Echoview Fiber Mill, Appalachian Knits, Ray Jones Woodcrafts, and the Penland School of Crafts and many more!). Knitting projects, fabric projects, and recipes further this place-based celebration of fiber and fabric arts.

Andrea Hungerford has yet to meet a handcraft that doesn’t intrigue her. With this serial, she aims to bring together crafters and makers into a community of those who find joy in creating with their hands, minds, and hearts. Focusing on a specific city or region—a ‘cluster of creativity’—these lookbooks are virtual travel guides for fiber and fabric enthusiasts.
