Garter Stripe Scarf Using Ms Moon Plump DK

Garter Stripe Scarf Using Ms Moon Plump DK

“Cheerful and bright.”

This Free Churchmouse Pattern has been retired because the yarn we used for it was discontinued, or we no longer carry it.

'Right' side or 'wrong,' we love the cheery stripes and itty-bitty pom-poms on our beginner-level garter stripes scarf. In Mrs Moon Plump DK, a super soft single-ply yarn with off-the-charts squish, this project is simple to knit and such fun to wear. Garter stitch knit lengthwise keeps the colorful stripes loooong. The generous size allows for extra wraps round and round your necktoasty warm!

Approx. 7½ x 82"/19 x 208cm.

8 skeins Mrs Moon Plump DK (125 yds/115m each): 4 skeins in Color A (main color) and 1 skein each of contrast colors B, C, D, and E (our shop sample used A = Pavlova, B = Rhubarb Crumble, C = Marmalade, D = Bonbon, E = Pistachio Ice Cream).

Or approx. 800 yds/732m of an equivalent DK-weight yarn (our shop sample used approx. 560 yds/512m of Color A and 60 yds/55m each of the 4 contrast colors).

US 8 (5mm) 24-32"/60-80cm circular needles.
Darning needle to finish.
Pom-pom maker: ¾"/20mm (optional).

20 sts = 4"/10cm in garter stitch.

See the "Basic Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.

Cast On: With Color B, using cable cast-on method, cast on 380 sts. Work in garter stitch (knit every row) in the following stripe sequence.

Note: Carry Color A (main color) up the side without cutting; cut contrast colors at the end of each 2-row sequence, leaving an 8"/20cm tail.

Rows 1-2: Color B; at end of Row 2, cut yarn.
Rows 3-6: Color A (main color).
Rows 7-8: Color C; at end of Row 8, cut yarn.
Rows 9-12: Color A.
Rows 13-14: Color D; at end of Row 14, cut yarn.
Rows 15-18: Color A.
Rows 19-20: Color E; at end of Row 20, cut yarn.
Rows 21-24: Color A.

Repeat Rows 1-24 one more time, then Rows 1-20 once more. Bind off loosely in Color E, matching tension of cast-on edge as closely as possible. Fasten off.

Finishing: Steam or wet block as desired. Following pom-pom maker instructions, make 6-8 pompoms per end, in different colors. Attach pom-poms securely using either ends of yarn or new yarn. Weave in all remaining ends.

When casting on large numbers of stitches (hello Barb's Koigu Ruffle) we've learned a wee trick. Place a stitch marker every 50 stitches. Making life easier when it's time to re-count for the grand total!
