Diagonal Lace Poncho
Diagonal Lace Poncho
Pam summed up our feelings about summer when she said, “Summer is when I start thinking about linen and lace.” Following in Kathy’s footsteps, Pam knitted the Diagonal Lace Scarf & Wrap to poncho dimensions using our free adaptation and Isager Plant Fibre. The result is a breezy summer-weight poncho with flattering lines of eyelet that’s a truly satisfying lace project. The repeating diagonal pattern also creates a lovely, slightly biased drape that we think complements the lace pattern beautifully.
Spun in Italy, Isager’s Plant Fibre is a blend of ramie, bamboo and hemp. Ramie’s bast fibers, like linen, are slightly resistant to dye, which creates a gorgeous, slightly muted color palette with a natural sheen. The bamboo enhances that sheen and adds a silky drape. And hemp, nature’s strongest fiber, adds strength and a softness that only increases with washing. With a hand between linen and cotton that feels light against the skin, this poncho is sure to be a summer staple.
Pick up the Churchmouse Diagonal Lace Scarf pattern below (if you don't already own it), and the free adaptation that explains how to resize and seam for a poncho. Then choose a color of Isager Plant Fibre--you'll need 4 skeins.

Approx. 24 sts = 4"/10cm in pattern, after blocking.
It's amazing what happens when you add just the tiniest lace-weight strand to a project - you can often knit a fabric open to the tune of many stitches per inch. For example, Fine Art normally knits up at 7 stitches to the inch; adding the Fine Lace let us knit it at 5 stitches to the inch.
If you choose your own color combination, it’s a good idea not to go too much lighter or darker than the dominant color in the Fine Art or you'll get a visually “jumpy” fabric.
