By Hand Serial / Issue 9: Nova Scotia

"A travel guide for crafters and makers."

In the ninth issue of By Hand Serial, Andrea Hungerford continues her place-based celebration of fiber and fabric with a trip to Canada’s Nova Scotia. There, she discovers the experimentation and creativity of makers in “a region of the world that has thus far managed to preserve its wild expanses and historical roots.”

This issue is filled with photo essays, day trips, excursions and conversations with local makers (including Gaspereau Valley Fibres, Sea Glass Designs, Handmaiden and Fleece Artist yarns, Quilt Artist Karen Henry, TapRoot Fibre, the Mineville Wool Project, and many more!). Knitting projects, fabric projects, and a great pickling recipe fill the colorful pages of this travel guide for crafters.

Andrea Hungerford has yet to meet a handcraft that doesn’t intrigue her. With this serial, she aims to bring together crafters and makers into a community of those who find joy in creating with their hands, minds, and hearts. Focusing on a specific city or region—a ‘cluster of creativity’—these lookbooks are virtual travel guides for fiber and fabric enthusiasts.
