Basic Socks Using Manos Alegria Grande
Our mothers (and their mothers) knew this sock by heart—its vertical heel flap, turned heel, picked-up gussets, and grafted toe. For many of us, it’s the first sock we learned and we return again and again to this straightforward, comfy basic. Once you understand its simple structure, improvise to your heart’s content!
We designed a free worsted-weight adaptation to our Basic Sock pattern to knit them in brilliant, bouncy Manos Alegria Grande. A blend of superwash merino and sturdy polyamide, it’s resilient and super soft—perfect for warming your toes around the house!
You can pick up the pattern and a fabulous color below (you'll need just 1 skein for one pair of socks), or go to Manos Alegria Grande to find out more about the yarn. If you already own the Basic Socks pattern, click on the Free Adaptation to see the modifications for using worsted-weight yarn.
Medium adult: Medium width; up to 10"/25cm foot.

Approx. 20 sts = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch, after blocking.
The Free Adaptation
See "The Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.
Please refer to the original pattern for complete instructions. Only changes are covered in this adaptation.
Numbers that apply specifically to the worsted-weight version are in bold below. Before you begin, we suggest that you pencil the bold numbers into your ‘Basic Sock’ pattern for ease of reading.
Cuff and foot variations: Work in K1/P1 ribbing for beginning of cuff; switch to stockinette st (knit every round) for remainder of sock.
1. Cuff: Cast on 40 sts. Divide sts onto 3 dpns [14/14/12]; join in round and work in K1/P1 ribbing for 12 rounds. Change to stockinette st. Continue until cuff measures approx. 8"/20cm.
2. Heel flap: Set-up row: K2, *Sl 1 pwise WYIB, K1*; repeat between * * 8 more times [20 sts on Needle 1]; divide remaining 20 sts evenly on Needles 2 and 3. Working only on 20 sts on Needle 1, turn work. Work Rows 1 and 2 per pattern. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 8 more times [19 rows total].
3. Turn heel: Row 1 (WS): Sl 1 pwise WYIF, P11, P2Tog, P1 [5 sts left unworked], turn.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1 pwise WYIB, K5, SSK, K1 [5 sts left unworked], turn.
Row 3 (WS): Sl 1 pwise WYIF, purl to 1 st before turning gap, P2Tog, P1 [3 sts left unworked], turn.
Row 4 (RS): Sl 1 pwise WYIB, knit to 1 st before turning gap, SSK, K1 [3 sts left unworked], turn.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 one time. Work last two rows per pattern. 12 sts remain on Needle 1. Don’t turn.
Pick up for gussets: With RS facing, . . . pick up and knit 10 sts along edge of heel flap . . . This is now Needle 1.
Slip insteps sts to one needle and knit. This is Needle 2.
Again with spare needle, pick up and knit 10 sts along second heel-flap edge . . . ; with same needle, knit 6 of the 12 heel sts. This is Needle 3. Slip remaining 6 heel sts to Needle 1.
You should now have 16 sts on Needles 1 and 3, and 20 sts on Needle 2.
Shape gussets: Work as per pattern, knitting all sts on Needle 2 in every round.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until 40 sts remain. [10 sts on Needles 1 and 3; 20 sts on Needle 2]
Foot: Continue in stockinette stitch on 40 sts until sock, measured from back of heel, is 1½"/4cm less than desired overall length.
Shape toe: With 10 sts on Needles 1 and 3 and 20 sts on Needle 2, work toe decreases per pattern until 16 sts remain.
Graft toe: Follow pattern instructions for grafting toe or for alternate toe closing.
Second sock: Make another one to match!
