Basic Bulky Beanie

Basic Bulky Beanie

“Lively and quick!”

Warm weather seems to be a long way off. Mornings are frosty, the wind is chilly, the cold is nipping at our nose and ears… Well, we can take care of that! A Basic Beanie in a puffy fiber will be on your head in—if not a few hours—a few nights of knitting. It’s a free pattern, so all you need to do is pick a color!

For a hat both warm and quick, we’ve picked Blue Sky Fibers Bulky—a single-ply fiber that’s half alpaca (for softness), half wool (for spring), and wholly super-chunky (for speed)! And its generous scale renders simple stitches striking.

Click on the Free Pattern tab to see the hat pattern. Then choose a charming color of Blue Sky Fibers Bulky below; you'll need 2 skeins for one hat (or 3 skeins for 2 hats—think stripes!).

Adult medium, approx. 20"/51cm circumference; adult large, approx. 22"/56cm circumference.
Directions for adult medium size given, with adult large size in parentheses ( ).

2 skeins Blue Sky Fibers Bulky (45 yds/41m each). Both samples shown with ribbed edge and optional stripes; colors are Gray Wolf with Brown Bear stripes and Brown Bear with Frost stripes.

US 15 (10mm) 16" circular & double-point needles, or size to obtain gauge.
US 13 (9mm) 16" circular needles, or one size smaller than needle used to obtain gauge.
5 stitch markers, 1 in a different color.
Darning needle to finish.

8 sts = 4" in stockinette stitch.

See the "Basic Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.

GLOSSARY: K = knit; K2Tog = knit 2 stitches together; M1 = make one (with tip of left needle, lift strand running between needles from the front; knit into the back of it); P = purl; St(s) = stitch(es).

To adjust size: For rolled edge version, add or subtract sts in multiples of 5. For ribbed edge version add or subtract sts in multiples of 2; adjust to a multiple of 5 sts for straight section and decrease rounds.

Rolled edge version: Using smaller needle, cast on 40 (45) sts. Place contrast-color marker and join in round, being careful not to twist.
Knit every round until work measures 1½"/3.8cm. Proceed to straight section.

Ribbed edge version: Using smaller needle, cast on 40 (44) sts. Place contrast-color marker and join in round, being careful not to twist.
Rounds 1-4: (K1, P1) around, slipping marker.
Adult large size only: Knit around and use M1 method to increase one stitch at end of round (45 sts).
Both sizes: Proceed to straight section.

Straight section: (both versions) Change to larger needle and knit every round, slipping marker, until work measures 5½"/14cm (5¾"/14.5cm), or desired length, from bottom of rolled edge or cast-on edge of beanie; on last round, place 4 more markers every 8 (9) sts.
Note: The remaining decrease rounds will add approx. 2½"/6cm to hat depth.

Decrease rounds: (both versions) Note: Change to double-point needles when necessary.

Round 1: *Knit to 2 sts before marker, K2Tog*; repeat between * * around. [5 sts decreased]
Round 2: Knit.

Repeat Round 1 only (decreasing every round) until 5 sts remain.

Finishing: Break yarn, leaving a 7"/18cm tail. With darning needle, thread tail through all 5 sts one at a time; draw tail up tight. Run tail through same 5 sts again and bring needle to wrong side through the center. Weave in ends on wrong side. Wet block or steam gently as desired.
