Seed Stitch Triangle Scarf Using Catherine Lowe Merino 3 & Silk Mohair 1

Seed Stitch Triangle Scarf Using Catherine Lowe Merino 3 & Silk Mohair 1

“Stunning in its simplicity.”

We asked our friend, Catherine Lowe, for a simple, ‘get acquainted’ project that would give knitters a taste of her meticulous methods and bespoke yarns. This stunner of a free pattern was the result! The riveting texture of seed stitch combined with Catherine’s precise finishing techniques makes for a scarf that’s exceptionally beautiful in its simplicity.

The Seed Stitch Triangle Scarf is knit holding Catherine Lowe’s Merino 3 together with her Silk Mohair 1. The resulting fabric is truly astounding! Lace-weight Silk Mohair 1 adds a soft, gentle halo to the graceful, drapey fabric of fingering-weight Merino 3. Together, these yarns have stable stitch structure, wonderful integrity, and stunning stitch definition. This triangle scarf will retain its shape and appearance through countless wears and washes.

Glossary:
Inc(’d) = increase(d); K = knit; KBFB = knit into back, then front, then back of same stitch; M1Pwise = make one purlwise (with tip of left needle, lift strand running between needles from the front; purl into the back of it); P = purl; St(s) = stitch(es).

Knitters' Notes:
For this project, Catherine recommends using sharper, metal needles, like Addi Rockets. Using fixed circulars is preferred over interchangeables, since the fine single plies can get caught in the join. Merino is very bouncy and will spring back a little when dried and relaxed. We recommend that you swatch a 6" square in seed stitch (you will have plenty of yarn to make a couple swatches and finish your project) to practice your blocking technique and observe how your fabric changes in size. Use a gentle wool wash (Catherine prefers The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo) and follow the blocking instructions on the pattern. Think of it like a lace project, where you will want to block it under some tension, and pin out your piece so that it's at least 105% of desired finished dimensions. Use blocking wires for smooth straight edges. Allow your piece to air dry thoroughly before releasing it from tension.

Cast on:
With gauge needle and holding one strand of each yarn, cast on 2 sts.

Triangle:
Set-up row: K1, M1Pwise, K1. [3 sts]
Row 1 (inc): *K1, P1*; repeat between * * to last stitch, KBFB. [2 sts inc’d]
Repeat Row 1 approx. 150 more times, or to desired depth, and you have enough yarn remaining to bind off. Note: This piece has no right or wrong side.

Bind off:
With larger needle, bind off knitwise. Weave in ends as invisibly as possible.

Blocking:
Soak scarf in lukewarm water with a little gentle wool wash (Catherine prefers The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo) for several hours or overnight. Rinse two or three times by soaking in fresh lukewarm water (careful—don’t agitate or twist!) until water is clear. This removes the mill finish that is characteristic of Catherine’s yarns. Gently squeeze out as much water as possible. Roll in towels and squeeze out as much remaining moisture as possible. Place on moisture-safe surface, and using fine blocking wires or lots of pins, pin edges straight and corners to points. Pull to at least 105% of desired finished dimensions (Merino is very bouncy and will spring back a little when dried and relaxed, so it helps to block it under some tension). Allow to air dry thoroughly.
