Glossary:
CC = contrast color; K = knit; K2Tog = knit 2 stitches together; KFB = knit into front then back of same st; MC = main color; RS = right side; SSK = slip, slip, knit (slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, insert left needle into front of 2 slipped stitches from left; from this position, K2tog); St(s) = stitch(es); WS = wrong side.
When counting garter ridges, include the cast-on ridge and aim for the same number of ridges on both sides of fabric. At cast-on and bind-off leave 8" ends. These will be used for finishing later.
BUNNY
Body/head (make two pieces):
Using long-tail cast-on method, cast on 12 sts.
Body (garter stitch): Knit 23 rows. [12 ridges]
Neck (stockinette stitch): Knit 1 row (RS). Purl 1 row (WS).
Head (garter stitch): Knit 12 rows. [6 ridges]
Head-shaping Row 1 (RS): K1, SSK, K to last 3 sts, K2Tog, K1. [10 sts]
Row 2 (WS): Knit.
Repeat head-shaping Rows 1 & 2 once more. [8 sts] Bind off.
Ears (make two):
Using long-tail cast-on method, cast on 4 sts. Knit 19 rows. [10 ridges]
Row 1: K2Tog twice. [2 sts]
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: K2Tog. Fasten off.
Pinch bottom of ear and use cast-on end and darning needle to take a small tuck; set aside.
Legs (make two)
Using long-tail cast-on method, cast on 10 sts. Knit 19 rows. [10 garter ridges] Bind off.
Arms (make two):
Using long-tail cast-on method, cast on 8 sts. Knit 15 rows. [8 garter ridges] Bind off.
Tail (make one):
Using long-tail cast-on method, cast on 6 sts. Knit 11 rows. [6 garter ridges] Bind off and cut yarn. With bind-off end of yarn and darning needle, work a short running stitch around outside edge, rounding off corners. Gather up slightly and stuff with cast-on end of yarn. Set aside.
Finishing:
Work seams with mattress stitch, using yarn tails when possible. Seam up one side of body/head. Insert ears securely at top of head by seaming first 2 sts, attaching first ear, seaming 2 more sts (between ears), attaching second ear, and seaming last 2 sts. Seam down second side of head/body. Leave bottom of body open for now. Stitch tail to back, 1⁄2" above bottom edge so bunny can sit up. Stuff body/head softly and sew bottom edge closed.
Fold each arm in half; seam one end and side edges together. Stuff softly (a pencil’s eraser end helps). Run a gathering stitch around open end; pull tight to close. Attach arms to body (seams facing downward) just below neck space with 3–4 tight sts; end with a small knot.
Fold each leg in half; seam one end and side edges together. Stuff softly and stitch end closed. Attach legs to bottom edge of body (seams facing inward); end with a small knot.
Use darning needle to insert yarn ends through body and out other side; clip ends. Tie twill bows around neck space and stitch securely to bunny at back.
BUNTING FLAGS:
We’ve written instructions for two-row stripes; carry color not in use up the side. You can also make your flags solid, color blocked, or striped any way you like—just use up your leftover bits.
With MC, cast on 1 st with a slip knot (make the loop that goes onto your needle with the tail end of yarn, not the working end of yarn). [1 st]
Row 1 (RS): With MC, KFB into st on needle. [2 sts]
Row 2 (WS): With MC, KFB, K1. [3 sts]
Rows 3 & 4: With CC, knit.
Row 5 (RS): With MC, KFB, knit to end. [4 sts]
Row 6 (WS): With MC, KFB, knit to end. [5 sts] Repeat Rows 3–6 until you have 25 sts.
With MC, bind off purlwise. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Finishing:
Weave in ends on WS. With darning needle and yarn, sew bunting flags to twill tape, approx. 21⁄2" apart. Attach bunnies in spaces, if desired.
Give bunny a hug!
