Diagonal Garter Stitch Pillow Cover Using Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky
This cuddly, bouncy pillow cover has filled the corners of our homes with coziness. At its heart is the diagonal garter stitch from our Picot-Edge Throw and Afghan pattern. It’s fabulously adaptable and therein lies its genius! It can slant across any sized pillow you’d like (not just the 18” square we did) and blend in wherever you toss it—on your sofa or bed, on a chair or even the floor. We knit the plain-edge version here, but you can add the bobbly picots for a bit of lace-like trim.
We found Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky to be the perfect mix of soft and quick in our search for deliciously squishy yarns. It blends the softness of alpaca with the springy reliability of Peruvian Highland wool at a nice, chunky gauge. And its saturated, heathered colors provide a great range of choices for any home.
Pillow Cover: Approx. 18 x 18"/ 45 x 45 cm.
3 skeins Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky (131 yds/120m each). Sample shown in Color 7245 Pitch Black.
Or approx. 393 yds/360m total of an equivalent chunky-weight yarn.
Yarn is held single throughout.

The Free Adaptation
See "The Details" tab for size, yarn, needle, and gauge information.
Refer to Churchmouse at Home 'Picot Edge Mohair Throw' pattern for complete instructions.
Cast on: Make two pieces as follows:
With yarn held single, using long-tail cast-on method, cast on 4 sts. Knit 1 row.
Following pattern directions for plain edge version, work increase rows until sides measure 18"/46cm (or to match pillow form dimensions). Note: Be sure to count the number of stitches on the needle before you begin decreasing so you can match your second piece exactly.
Work decrease rows per pattern directions.
Finishing: Hold the two pieces together so that the YO spaces match up along the sides. Thread darning needle with 2 strands of yarn; sew three sides together with a running stitch, going in and out of the YO spaces; insert pillow form and complete fourth side.
Tassels (optional): Make four tassels, as follows:
For each tassel, cut two 18" yarn ties. Place one tie across 4 x 4"/10 x 10cm piece of cardboard. Wrap yarn around cardboard and over tie approx. 35 times. Use yarn tie to tie bundle tightly at one end; slide bundle off cardboard. Wrap second tie several times around bundle approx. ¾"/2cm from tied end; fasten off and bury ends. Cut loops and trim to even up.
Attach securely to corners.
