The Design

Our wee friends love to help you celebrate the holidays. And they’ve certainly dressed up for the occasion! These handmade pals are fun, festive, and full of cheer. Popped in a stocking, presented with a package, perched among the boughs of your tree—the more you make, the merrier!

We’ve come up with a few colorways of Brooklyn Tweed’s woolly, tweedy, fingering-weight Loft. This 2-ply yarn is woolen spun from Targhee-Columbia wool. Bouncy and airy, Loft is a pleasure to work with on these little fellows. And its big, heathered color palette (37 colors!) means you can have heaps of fun coming up with your own colorways!

On this page, you’ll also find a few shades of Crewel Wool for the elves’ wee faces and packs of washers (to insert at their base to keep ‘em standing tall . . . or small).

The Details

FINISHED SIZE
Tiny wee elf: Approx. 3½"/9cm tall, or desired height.

YARN
3 skeins Brooklyn Tweed Loft (275 yds/251m each): 1 skein each of main color (MC), hat color (HC) and scarf color (SC) and 2 skeins of Appleton Wool Ltd. crewel yarn (27 yds/25m each) in face color (FC). Note: Two skeins of Appleton crewel yarn will make approx. 12 tiny wee elves. You will have enough Loft to make many more elves if you choose, in which case you will need more crewel yarn for the faces. Use different combinations of colors for body, hats and scarves.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
US 1½ (2.5mm) double-points (set of five), or size to obtain gauge.
One or more flat metal washers per elf: approx. 1"/2.5cm outside diameter.
Wool or polyester stuffing.
One locking marker.
Tapestry needle.

GAUGE
28–32 sts = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch in the round; a dense fabric keeps stuffing from showing through.

No one elf is like another! And each elf seems to reveal a unique personality once the top knot is tied.
