The Design

Easy as can be, this little free pattern was inspired by our favorite Basic Beanie—with a whole new garter-stitch touch! A nice band of garter-stitch around the edge gives this topper a snug, cuddly fit around the ears. Then it’s smooth sailing in stockinette, up to swirling decreases at the crown. Topped with a pompom to finish, you couldn’t ask for a cuter cap!

We chose to knit the Basic Baby Beanie in two colors of Rowan Cotton Wool—one for the stockinette stitch, another for the garter-stitch band and pompom. Lightweight and so, so soft, Cotton Wool is a beautiful, worsted-weight blend of organic cotton and merino wool. Its chainette-style strand gives a bouncy structure to this airy, breathable fiber combo. It’s perfect for a comfy little beanie!

FINISHED SIZES
Newborn: Approx. 14"/36cm circumference.

YARN
1 skein Rowan Cotton Wool (142yds/130m each), Or approx. 85 (100, 125, 140, 170, 200) yds/ 78 (91, 114, 128, 155, 183)m of an equivalent light worsted-weight yarn.
For contrasting edge: Approx. 16 (19, 21, 24, 27, 29) yds/14.5 (17, 19.5, 22, 24.5, 26.5)m of contrasting color.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
US 7 (4.5mm) 16"/40cm circular needles and double-points, or size to obtain gauge.
US 4 (3.5mm) 16" circular, or three sizes smaller than gauge needle for garter stitch egde.
5 stitch markers, 1 in a contrast color. Darning needle to finish.

GAUGE
Approx. 20 sts = 4" in stockinette stitch in the round.
