Inside Outside Cowl using Rowan Kidsilk Haze

“Totally seamless, utterly reversible.”

With some very simple knitting—and a little fussy finishing—you'll have a double layer cowl that's totally seamless, utterly reversible, and very versatile. Designed for our 2012 LYS (Local Yarn Shop) tour, the two-color version in Rowan Kidsilk Haze can be worn either color out, or shifted half way for bold color blocking.

We've also included a Bonus Pattern for a totally tubular headband that you can knot, or not.

The Details

FINISHED SIZES
Small cowl: Approx. 24"/61cm around x 5½"/14cm deep, after grafting or seaming.
Large cowl: Approx. 28"/71cm around x 9"/23cm deep, after grafting or seaming.
Headband: Approx. 4"/10cm wide x 17"/43 cm around, after knotting and grafting, before stretching.

YARN
Small cowl: Shown lower center: 1 skein Rowan Kidsilk Haze (229 yds/210m), Color 639. Or approx. 229 yds/210m of an equivalent lace-weight mohair.
Large cowl: Shown upper row: 2 skeins Rowan Kidsilk Haze (229 yds/210m each), Colors 595 and 641. Or shown lower left: 1 skein Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe (460 yds/420m), Color 359. Or approx. 460 yds/420m of an equivalent lace-weight mohair.
Headband: Shown lower right: 1 skein Rowan Kidsilk Haze (229 yds/210m), Color 599. Or approx. 150 yds/137m of an equivalent lace-weight yarn.

NEEDLES
Cowls: US 2⁄3 (3mm) 16 (24)" circular needle, or size to obtain gauge.
Headband: US 2⁄3 (3mm) double-point needles, or size to obtain gauge.
All pieces: Another needle or set of needles (same size or smaller), for grafting.
US D-E (3.25-3.5mm) crochet hook for provisional cast-on.

GAUGE
Approx. 24 sts/38 rounds = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch in the round, blocked.

KNITTER'S NOTES

Even experienced knitters sometimes drop a stitch with yarn this fine. Check your work often as it can be hard to pull the mohair back to fix a mistake. Besides, who doesn't want to stop and admire the glowing colors of Kidsilk Haze?

And, we'll say it again—the grafting is totally worth it! It does take some time to finish however. Make an evening of it . . . a cup of tea at your elbow and a favorite movie in the background. By the time your 'old chestnut' is done, your cowl will be ready to steam and wear.
