By Hand Serial / Issue 11: Vermont and New Hampshire

"A travel guide for crafters and makers."

In the eleventh issue of By Hand Serial, Andrea Hungerford continues her place-based celebration of fiber and fabric with a trip to New Hampshire and Vermont. She journeys along the shores of Lake Champlain and Lake Winnipesaukee, through granite mountains, and into the small farms and towns tucked into wooded vales, each with a long history of artistry and craftsmanship. Her visits with the many talented makers and artists reminded her how important it is to be a lifelong learner.

This issue is filled with photo essays, day trips, excursions, and conversations with local makers (including Harrisville Designs, Wing and a Prayer Farm, Alice Ogden of Black Ash Baskets, Ellen Mason of Odacia Knitting and Sewing patterns, The Woolly Thistle, Green Mountain Spinnery, Marshfield School of Weaving, and artist Dianne Schullenberger). Knitting projects, fabric projects, and a great recipe for pear pie (called “Pearway to Heaven”) are captured in the colorful pages of this travel guide for makers.

Andrea Hungerford has yet to meet a handcraft that doesn’t intrigue her. With the By Hand Serial, she aims to bring together crafters and makers into a community of those who find joy in creating with their hands, minds, and hearts. Focusing on a specific city or region—“a cluster of creativity”—these lookbooks are a treat for fiber and fabric enthusiasts.
