Colorwork Slouch Hat & Cowl Using Wool and the Gang Alpachino Merino
The Design
“Play with squishy, cuddly colorwork.”
This free pattern plays with a fun, graphic colorwork motif on a slouchy hat and cozy cowl! The Colorwork Slouch Hat & Cowl use two colors for a pattern of zig-zags and diamonds. The hat has a snug, ribbed edge and a slightly slouchy shape, while the cowl has a nice, stand-up structure. Plus, they’re both quick knits!
We chose Wool and the Gang’s Alpachino Merino for the Colorwork Slouch Hat & Cowl. You’ll only need two skeins—each in a different color—for both the cowl and the hat, if you switch up the main and contrasting colors! A chunky-weight blend of sustainably sourced alpaca and merino, this yarn has a gently poofy twist and creates a plush and cozy fabric. And with a color palette that features both playful brights and calm neutrals, there are so many fun options for combos!
The Details
FINISHED SIZE
Hat: Approx. 20"/51cm around x 10"/25.5cm deep, to fit 21–22"/53.5–56" head.
Cowl: Approx. 24"/XXcm around x 8"/20cm deep.
YARN
2 skeins Wool and the Gang Alpachino Merino (110 yds/100m each); 1 each in main color (MC) and contrast color (CC).
Or approx. 110 yds/100m each of an equivalent chunky-weight yarn. Note: This is enough to complete a hat and cowl in opposite colorways.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
US 11 (8mm) 16"/40cm circular needle and double-point needles, or size to obtain gauge.
US 9 (5.5mm) 16"/40cm circular needle, or two sizes smaller than gauge needle.
5 markers, one in contrast color for start of round. Darning needle to finish.
Optional: 3⅜"/85mm pom-pom maker.
GAUGE
Approx. 12 sts/14 rows = 4"/10cm in colorwork stitch in the round, on larger needles, after blocking.
